A stash jar is smell-proof when it's airtight. The seal matters more than the material. For home storage, a glass jar with a tight sealing lid is the best option. For carrying, a small airtight metal container is tougher and easier to pocket.
The same thing that keeps the smell in also keeps your herb fresh. Air, light, heat and moisture are what break it down. A good jar handles the air. Where you keep it handles the rest.
What Actually Makes a Stash Jar Smell-Proof
- An airtight seal. A silicone or rubber gasket in the lid is what does the work. Screw-top lids without a gasket let smell leak out.
- Non-porous material. Glass and metal don't absorb odor. Plastic can, and over time it starts to smell even when it's empty.
- The right size. Less empty space means less air sitting on your herb.
- Actually closing it. Obvious, but a jar that's half screwed on is just a cup.

Our Picks
Storage Set: Best for Home

$30
The Storage Set is two airtight glass jars, one with a black cap and one with a white cap, so you can keep two strains apart without labels. Each holds about an eighth (3.5 grams). They stack neatly and look good enough to leave on a shelf.
The glass base also swaps with the base of our Grinder. Grind straight into a jar, cap it, done. Store, grind and serve, all with the same pieces.
Storage Pill: Best for Carrying

$15
The Storage Pill is anodized aluminum, airtight, waterproof and smell-proof. A big cap on one end makes it easy to fill. The other end is a funnel, so you can load a bowl straight from it without spilling. It's made to pair with the Path Pipe and fits in the Path Pipe Carry Case.
Stashlight: Best for Joints
$30
The Stashlight is a doob tube with an airtight aluminum seal and a built-in refillable lighter. It's built for joints, but it works as a small stash container too. More in our guide to the best doob tubes.
How to Store Weed So It Stays Fresh
Keep it airtight. Air dries herb out and lets the smell escape. Close the jar every time.
Keep it dark. Light breaks down potency over time. A cabinet or drawer is better than a windowsill. UV glass helps if your jar sits out.
Keep it cool. Room temperature or a little below is ideal. Skip the top of the fridge, the spot by the stove, and the glovebox in summer.
Keep the humidity right. Around 58 to 62 percent relative humidity is the range most people aim for. Too dry and it crumbles and burns harsh. Too wet and it can mold. A small two-way humidity pack in the jar handles this for you.
Use the right size jar. A big jar with a little bit of herb is mostly air. Size down as you go.
Don't use the fridge or freezer. Temperature swings cause condensation, which invites mold. Freezing also makes the trichomes brittle, so they break off when you handle it.
Don't store it in your grinder. Ground herb dries out faster. Grind what you need, when you need it.
Smell-Proof Isn't Child-Proof
A sealed jar keeps the smell in. It doesn't keep curious hands out. If you have kids or pets in the house, store your stash somewhere they can't reach, or in a lockable case. Our Capsule Carry Case fits the Storage Set and has a lockable zipper. More on that in our guide to bong bags and cases.
Taking It With You
For travel, go small and airtight. A metal container like the Storage Pill won't break in a bag, and it seals tight enough that your bag doesn't smell. Check local laws before you travel with anything. Our post on traveling with a grinder covers the packing side. For more discreet gear, see our list of smell-proof smoking accessories.
FAQ
Are glass jars smell-proof?
Glass jars with a sealing gasket in the lid are. Glass jars with a loose screw top or cork usually aren't, since smell escapes around the lid.
What is the best container to store weed in?
An airtight glass jar, kept somewhere cool and dark. For carrying, an airtight metal container. Avoid plastic bags and pop-top containers for anything longer than a day or two.
Do mason jars keep weed fresh?
Mostly. They seal well, but the clear glass lets light in, and they're often too big for small amounts. Keep them in a dark cabinet.
Should I put a humidity pack in my stash jar?
For storage longer than a couple of weeks, it helps. Packs that hold around 58 to 62 percent humidity keep herb from drying out or getting too damp.
How much weed fits in a stash jar?
It depends on the jar. Each jar in our Storage Set holds about 3.5 grams, which is an eighth.
Are stash jars child-proof?
Most aren't. Smell-proof means airtight, not locked. Store it out of reach or in a lockable case if there are kids in the house.
