GRAV is one of the biggest names in glass. They've been blowing pipes out of South Austin since 2004, and if you've walked into a headshop in the last decade, you've seen their stuff on the shelf. So it makes sense that "GRAV vs Capsule" comes up a lot when people are shopping for a modern bong.
We make the Capsule, so take that into account. But we'll give you the straight comparison, including where GRAV is the better pick. There are a few.
The Short Version
GRAV makes a huge range of classic borosilicate glass: beakers, percolator pipes, gravity bongs and a modular system called STAX. The Capsule is one bong, designed to come apart, travel, and get fixed instead of replaced.
If you want percolators and options, GRAV. If you want one bong that's easy to clean, packs into a bag, and has a lifetime warranty, the Capsule.

GRAV: What They Do Well
Range
GRAV makes something for almost everyone. Small wide base pipes that sit low and stable. Big clear beakers. Gravitron gravity bongs. Coffee mug bubblers. Helix pieces that spin the smoke to cool it. If you like having options and trying different shapes, nobody covers more ground.
STAX
STAX is GRAV's modular system, first released in 2012. You start with a base, add one or two percolators, and finish with a mouthpiece. The pieces clip together, and you can swap them whenever you want. It's a tinkerer's bong, and since every piece comes apart, cleaning percs is a lot easier than with a one-piece pipe.
The catch is price. A STAX base runs around $125 and mouthpieces run $30 to $80, so a basic build starts around $155. Add percs and you're past $250 quickly.
Percolators
The Capsule doesn't have percs. GRAV has coil percs, tree percs, circle percs, honeycomb discs and showerheads. If you want extra filtration and the bubbling show that comes with it, GRAV wins this category easily. Not sure you need one? Here's how percolators work.
GRAV: Where It Falls Short
Travel. GRAV doesn't make cases for their pieces. A tall glass beaker is a shelf bong, and that's all it is. If you do carry one, here's what to look for in bong bags and cases.
Breakage. GRAV is clear about their policy: report damage on arrival within 10 days and defects within 60. After that, a cracked one-piece beaker means buying a new beaker. They don't do repairs. STAX helps here, since you only replace the piece that broke.
Cleaning one-piece glass. Beakers with fixed percs need a long soak and a lot of shaking. Fine if you keep up with it. Rough if you don't.
The Capsule: What It Does Well

We built the Capsule to fix the annoying parts of owning a bong.
It comes apart completely. Mouthpiece, chamber and base all separate, so you can reach and clean every surface. The glass is dishwasher safe. No twisting pipe cleaners into a curved neck you can't see inside.
It packs into itself. When you're done, the Capsule nests into a single cylinder that fits in a bag. Add the Carry Case and it's ready for a trip.
Every part is replaceable. We sell each piece on its own. Chip a bowl, buy a bowl. Want a bowl that won't chip at all? The stainless steel bowl piece fits any standard 14mm joint and stows inside the Capsule for travel.
Lifetime warranty. Glass breaks. We'd rather fix it than sell you a new bong.
Gear Patrol named the Capsule Best Bong in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The Capsule: Where It Falls Short
No percolators. It's a simple, smooth water pipe. If you want three stages of filtration, it's not that.
Fewer looks. Black or silver, plus limited glass colorways like Amber and Smoked. GRAV has way more styles.
Upfront cost. At $200, it costs more than a basic GRAV beaker. The difference is that you buy it once.
Head to Head
Cleaning
The Capsule comes fully apart with no percs to fight. STAX also comes apart, but percs still take work. One-piece GRAV beakers need a soak and a shake.
Edge: Capsule
Smoothness
A good perc cools smoke more than plain water does. With the right water level, the Capsule hits smooth, but a percolated GRAV piece takes it further.
Edge: GRAV
Durability
Both use borosilicate glass. The difference is what happens after a drop. The Capsule's metal parts take most of the abuse, and if the glass does break, you replace one piece and you're covered for life.
Edge: Capsule
Travel
Not close. The Capsule is designed to pack down. GRAV pieces aren't.
Edge: Capsule
Variety and Price Range
GRAV has pieces from about $45 to $200 and a style for every taste. The Capsule is one bong at $200.
Edge: GRAV
Who Should Buy Which
Buy GRAV if: you want percolators, you like trying different shapes, you want to spend under $150, or you want to build a custom STAX tower over time.
Buy the Capsule if: you want a bong that's easy to clean, travels in a bag, and gets fixed instead of replaced. One bong, for a long time.

FAQ
Is GRAV a good bong brand?
Yes. GRAV makes solid borosilicate glass with a wide range of styles and has been around since 2004. Just know that their coverage is 10 days for arrival damage and 60 days for defects.
What is GRAV STAX?
STAX is GRAV's modular bong system. You pick a base, add percolators, and top it with a mouthpiece. Pieces clip together and can be swapped or replaced one at a time.
Is the Capsule better than GRAV?
For cleaning, travel and long-term durability, yes. For percolators, variety and lower prices, GRAV has the edge.
Can I use a GRAV bowl in the Capsule?
The Capsule ships with its own bowl. Our stainless steel bowl piece is a standard 14mm male, so it works with GRAV's 14mm pieces too. Not sure what size you have? Here's our bong bowl size guide.
Does GRAV make a travel bong?
GRAV makes small pieces like pocket bubblers and the Small Wide Base, but no cases. For a full-size bong that's built to travel, see our list of travel bongs.
