A bong is a water pipe for flower. You light a bowl, pull the smoke down through water, and the water cools it before it reaches you. That part is the same for every bong. What changes from one type to the next is the shape, the material, and all the extras, and those change how it hits, how easy it is to clean, and how long it survives.
Here's every common type of bong and who each one is actually good for.
Types of Bongs by Shape
Straight Tube

One straight cylinder with a flat base. The simplest design there is. Straight tubes hit fast and hard because there's nothing slowing the smoke down, and they're easy to clean because you can see and reach everything.
Good for: people who want a simple, no-fuss piece. Downside: less water volume means a slightly harsher hit, and a narrow base tips more easily.
Beaker

Shaped like a lab beaker, with a wide, flat bottom that narrows into a tube. The wide base holds more water and makes it very stable. The chamber holds a bigger cloud too.
Good for: home use and bigger hits. Downside: harder to clean at the bottom corners and bulky to store.
Round Base (Bubble)
Similar to a beaker but with a round, bulb-shaped bottom. Holds plenty of water and looks classic. Slightly less stable than a flat beaker.
Recycler

Recyclers loop the water through a couple of chambers while you pull, so the smoke gets filtered more than once. The hits are very smooth and it's fun to watch.
Good for: people who want the smoothest possible hit, and dabbers. Downside: lots of thin glass, hard to clean, easy to break.
Multi-Chamber
Two or more stacked water chambers. Each one cools the smoke a bit more. Smooth, but tall and top-heavy.
Types of Bongs by Features
Percolator Bongs
Any bong with a percolator, a piece of glass inside that breaks the smoke into small bubbles for extra cooling. Showerhead, tree, honeycomb, and inline are the common ones. Smooth, but they add drag and make cleaning harder. Full breakdown: what a percolator bong is.
Ice Catcher Bongs
Small glass pinches in the neck that hold ice cubes. The smoke passes the ice on its way up for a colder hit. A simple feature that really works.
Gravity Bongs
Uses water pressure instead of your lungs to fill a chamber with smoke. Usually homemade from a bottle and a bucket. Hits very hard. More of a party trick than a daily driver.
Modular Bongs
Bongs that come apart into separate pieces instead of one sealed tube of glass. This is the category we build in. It makes cleaning much easier, since you can scrub every part by hand, and if something breaks, you replace one piece instead of the whole bong. See our modular bongs.

Travel and Mini Bongs
Smaller bongs built to pack up and go. Great for small spaces too. Look for sturdy materials and a way to seal it up for travel. Check out our small bongs and portable water pipes, or our roundup of the best travel bongs.
Bubblers
A hand pipe with a small water chamber. Somewhere between a pipe and a bong. More on that in bong vs pipe vs bubbler.
Types of Bongs by Material
- Glass: the most common by far. Clean taste and you can see when it needs cleaning. Borosilicate (scientific) glass is much tougher than cheap soft glass. The downside is obvious: it breaks.
- Silicone: nearly impossible to break and cheap. Many people notice a slight taste, and you can't see the smoke or how dirty it is.
- Acrylic (plastic): cheap and light. Harsher taste, scratches easily, and doesn't last.
- Metal (aluminum or stainless steel): very durable. Usually paired with glass so you still get a clean taste.
- Ceramic: can look beautiful. Heavy, fragile, and you can't see inside.
- Mixed materials: glass where you want clean flavor, metal where you want strength. That's what we did with the Capsule Water Pipe: a glass chamber with aluminum pieces that come apart for cleaning.
Every type is built from the same few pieces: a bowl, a downstem, a base, a tube and a mouthpiece. Here's what each part of a bong does. Comparing brands instead of shapes? See our roundup of the best bong brands.
Which Type of Bong Is Best?
There isn't one best type. There's a best type for how you smoke:
- Want it simple and easy to clean? Straight tube or modular.
- Want big, smooth hits at home? Beaker with an ice catcher.
- Want the smoothest hit possible and don't mind cleaning? Percolator or recycler.
- Traveling or tight on space? A small or travel bong.
- Clumsy? Silicone, or a modular piece where every part is replaceable.

FAQ
What's the most common type of bong?
The glass beaker. Stable, holds plenty of water, and easy to find anywhere.
Which type of bong hits the smoothest?
Recyclers and percolator bongs, followed by beakers with ice. The trade is more cleaning.
What type of bong is easiest to clean?
Straight tubes and modular bongs that come apart. No percs, no hidden corners.
Do silicone bongs melt?
No. Food-grade silicone handles lighter heat fine. Most silicone bongs use a glass or metal bowl anyway.
